A floating navel is a navel piercing for belly buttons that a standard navel piercing does not suit. It goes through the skin at the top of the navel in the usual way. The difference is the jewelry: the lower end is a flat disc that lies against the inside of the fold, instead of a ball or charm sitting in the bowl of the navel.
From the outside you see only the top end, which appears to float on the skin above your belly button. That is where the name comes from.
It exists to solve one common problem: navels that change shape when you sit down.
Why standard navel jewelry fails some navels
A standard belly button piercing relies on two things: a defined lip of skin at the top of the navel, and a bowl beneath it deep enough for the lower ball of the barbell to sit in without touching anything.
Plenty of navels have both when you stand and lose them when you sit. The fold closes, the bowl flattens, and the lower ball is pressed into the floor of the navel. Every time that happens, the ball acts as a lever and pushes the bar outward against the top of the piercing.
Repeat that every time you sit, all day, for a year of healing, and the result is predictable: soreness, irritation bumps, and in time migration, with the bar working its way toward the surface.
A flat disc takes that pressure point away. There is no ball to press on anything, so the piercing can sit still through the positions your body actually spends its day in.
Who it suits
A floating navel is usually suggested for:
- Shallow navels, where there is not enough depth below the top lip for a ball to sit freely.
- Navels that fold or close when you sit. This is the most common reason.
- A top lip that is present but not pronounced, enough to hold a bar but not to keep a standard one clear of the navel floor.
It does not rescue every navel. It still needs enough tissue at the top of the navel to anchor a bar. A navel with no usable skin above it, or a protruding outie, may not suit any navel piercing. Other variations exist for other anatomies, including a bottom navel through the lower rim, but they are a matter for in-person assessment rather than preference.
The assessment
The whole point of this piercing is how your navel behaves when it moves, so the assessment has to test that.
A good piercer will look at you standing, sitting and bending forward, and will pay particular attention to what the fold does when you sit. They will also judge the depth of the fold, because the length of the bar has to suit it closely.
A piercer who offers a floating navel without watching you sit has skipped the reason it exists. One who looks carefully and says no piercing is a good idea is saving you a year of trouble.
Pain
About 4 out of 10, identical to a standard navel piercing: a quick, firm pinch through a fold of skin.
The part that surprises people is the aftermath. The navel sits on a hinge, so every time you sit, bend or laugh you move it, and it stays tender for weeks.
Healing
Six to twelve months, and usually the full year. The flat disc reduces pressure, which gives the piercing a better chance of a steady heal, but it does not make the channel mature any faster.
- Weeks 1-4: swelling, tenderness, clear discharge, soreness when bending.
- Months 2-6: crusting, looks settled, still moving under clothes.
- Months 6-12: the channel toughens.
Downsize at eight to twelve weeks. Length matters more on this piercing than on most: the disc has to sit flat against the inside of the fold without pressing into it, and a bar left long moves every time your waistband does. Have your piercer do it. Piercing downsizing explains it for every placement.
Month-by-month detail is in how long a belly button piercing takes to heal.
Jewelry
Curved barbell, 14 gauge, in ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium, with a flat disc on the lower end and a small, low-profile top. The length is set by your piercer to your fold, not chosen from a standard size.
While it heals:
- Keep the top end small and smooth. No dangles, no large stones.
- Threadless or internally threaded only.
- Do not swap the disc bottom for a ball, even briefly.
Once healed, you can change the top as often as you like. Keep the disc. Listings sold as floating navel jewelry usually mean a disc-bottom bar, but check the material, threading and length rather than trusting the name. The materials guide explains what to look for.
Aftercare
Sterile saline twice a day, hands off, no rotating. The aftercare guide covers the routine.
Two navel-specific points:
- Dry the fold properly. The disc lies against skin inside the navel, which is already a warm spot that holds moisture. Pat it dry with clean paper towel after cleaning and showering.
- Keep waistbands off it. High-waisted jeans, tight leggings and belts press straight onto the top of the piercing. Low-rise or soft waistbands genuinely help while it heals.
No swimming in pools, hot tubs, lakes or the sea until it has healed.
Problems
Irritation bumps usually mean pressure: a waistband, a bar that needs downsizing, or sleeping face down. See piercing bumps.
Infection shows as spreading redness, heat, thick yellow or green discharge, and pain that gets worse rather than better. See a doctor the same day and leave the jewelry in. Infected belly button piercing explains how to tell it apart from irritation.
Migration, where the bar sits closer to the surface than it did and the skin over it looks thin, needs a piercer promptly. See belly button piercing rejection and piercing rejection.
Cost
$40 to $90 for the piercing in a US studio, the same as a standard navel, plus a disc-bottom bar in implant-grade titanium sized to your fold. Belly button piercing cost breaks down jewelry prices and the full first-year budget.
Frequently asked questions
What is a floating navel piercing?
A navel piercing adapted for belly buttons that are shallow or fold when you sit. It passes through the skin at the top of the navel like a standard one, but the jewelry has a flat disc on the lower end instead of a ball or charm, so nothing sits in the bowl of the navel and the top end appears to float.
How do I know if I need a floating navel?
If your navel is shallow, or folds and closes when you sit down, the lower ball of a standard bar gets pushed against it every time you sit. A piercer should check you standing, sitting and bending forward. If the fold collapses in any of those positions, a floating navel is usually what they will suggest.
Can you wear a normal belly ring in a floating navel piercing?
Usually not comfortably. The flat disc exists because a ball or dangling charm presses into a shallow navel and levers the bar outward. Swapping one back in, even once healed, brings back the pressure the piercing was designed to avoid.
Does a floating navel hurt more than a regular navel piercing?
No. It is the same procedure through the same fold of skin, about 4 out of 10: a quick, firm pinch. Like any navel piercing it can stay tender for weeks, because you move it every time you bend.
How long does a floating navel piercing take to heal?
Six to twelve months, the same as any navel piercing, and usually the full year. The jewelry style reduces pressure on the piercing, but it does not change how long the channel takes to mature.
Can everyone get a floating navel?
No. It still needs enough tissue at the top of the navel to hold a bar. A navel with no usable skin above it, or a protruding outie, may not suit any navel piercing, and a good piercer will tell you so rather than try.
