How much is a tongue piercing? Prices, jewelry and the first-year total

A tongue piercing costs $30 to $50 for the service in the US studio price lists we read, with jewelry extra, or $60 to $75 where starter jewelry is included. Unlike most piercings, it also needs a second, shorter barbell within a couple of weeks, so the real cost is higher than the fee.

Prices are as published in September 2026. We have not checked whether these studios meet the Association of Professional Piercers (APP) checklist, so they show how prices are quoted rather than being recommendations.

Amato’s $75 is a $40 service fee plus $35 for the jewelry.

Why there is a second barbell

A new tongue piercing swells, so it starts with a long barbell. Once the swelling has gone, that spare length is a problem in the mouth. The APP says that once swelling has subsided, it is vital to replace the original, longer jewelry with a shorter post or barbell to avoid damage to the teeth and gums, and that a qualified piercer should do it. The American Dental Association says you can crack a tooth by biting down too hard on a piercing, and that repeated clicking of the jewelry against your teeth can also cause damage. Jewelry prices

At the fee-only studios the lists show a barbell from $26 in Oklahoma City, from $36 in Phoenix and $45 in Oakland. The APP’s list of accepted materials for initial piercings includes implant-certified titanium (ASTM F-136). Gold or decorative pieces cost more.

The first months in total

The lists charged $10 for a jewelry change in Oakland and Philadelphia and $10 and up in Phoenix, while Amato says changes are free.

Costs outside the price list

The APP advises avoiding mouthwash containing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide during healing, so plan for an alcohol-free rinse. A dental check is also worth planning for. The 2023 review says periodic examinations by dentists can help prevent and reduce complications.

Cheap does not mean good value

The APP’s advice is not to act impulsively or be seduced by a low price, as you generally get what you pay for.
