The best earrings for sensitive ears are titanium with a stated grade, such as ASTM F136. Niobium and medical-grade plastic are the alternatives. Choose by material first and brand second, because “hypoallergenic” on a label tells you little.

We have not tested any of these earrings. We read what each maker publishes and checked it against what medical and piercing sources recommend, as read in November 2026. If your ears react badly, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) advises seeing a board-certified dermatologist.

What the makers publish

Maker Material it states Grade named? Nickel claim What the pages we read do not say
Grayling “F-136 implant-grade titanium” Yes Calls its titanium “naturally hypoallergenic” How gold pieces are finished, or the back material
Miru “Medical-grade titanium (ASTM F-136)” Yes “Always nickel-free” How gold pieces are finished, or the back material
Blomdahl Pure medical-grade titanium, or medical-grade plastic No, it says it complies with standards “like” ASTM Free from nickel Which titanium grade, or what its ceramic coating is made of
Simply Whispers Stainless steel, niobium, titanium, gold or silver, by product Only for 316L steel Exceeds Nickel Directive requirements The titanium grade, or plating on individual pieces

All of this is what the makers say about themselves. Grayling and Miru state the clearest grade. Blomdahl also has a plastic range, which suits anyone avoiding metal altogether.

Titanium

Healthline says titanium contains no nickel and calls it completely hypoallergenic. The Association of Professional Piercers (APP) calls titanium ideal for people with concerns about nickel sensitivity, and looks for implant-certified titanium that is ASTM F-136 compliant. Grade is what separates a checkable claim from an adjective.

Watch for finishes. A gold-look titanium earring is not solid gold, and the makers above do not all describe how the color is made.

Medical plastic

Blomdahl says its earrings are free from nickel and a range of other substances, including latex, and it also makes medical plastic backs. We have only the maker’s statement for that.

Niobium

Healthline says niobium contains no nickel and is safe for almost anyone, even very sensitive skin. The APP says it is very similar to titanium, but it has no implant-grade designation. Simply Whispers lists niobium among its metals.

Gold and steel

The sources disagree here. The AAD lists 18-, 22- or 24-karat yellow gold and surgical-grade stainless steel as choices. Healthline says surgical steel contains a small amount of nickel. Hypoallergenic earrings sets out each source’s list side by side.

What to check before you buy

  • A stated grade or standard, not just the word “hypoallergenic” or “nickel-free”.
  • The back. The AAD names earring backs among the biggest culprits for nickel exposure. See earring backs.
  • Plating. Healthline says plated gold can flake and expose you to nickel and other alloys.
  • The seller. On a marketplace, check that the listing comes from the maker or a seller it names, and that it states the material.

If your ears are already itchy or sore, read nickel allergy and piercings first. A new piercing is different too, so see the best earrings for new piercings.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best earrings for sensitive ears?

Titanium is the safest place to start. Healthline says titanium and niobium contain no nickel, and the APP calls titanium ideal for people concerned about nickel sensitivity. Look for a stated grade such as ASTM F136, and check what the back is made of.

What metal should I avoid with sensitive ears?

Nickel is the one to avoid, and the American Academy of Dermatology says more than 18 percent of people in North America are allergic to it. Healthline says plated gold can flake and expose you to nickel and other alloys.

Are Blomdahl earrings really hypoallergenic?

Blomdahl says its earrings are made from pure medical-grade titanium or medical-grade plastic and are free from nickel. That is the maker's statement. It says it complies with standards such as ASTM but names no grade on the pages we read, and we have not tested them.

Is surgical steel OK for sensitive ears?

The sources differ. The American Academy of Dermatology lists surgical-grade stainless steel as a safe choice, while Healthline says it is safe for most people but contains a small amount of nickel. If you know you react to nickel, start with titanium.

Do these earrings go in a new piercing?

This page is about healed ears. A new piercing should keep the jewelry your piercer fitted until it has healed. See our guide to the best earrings for new piercings.
