For a healed ear, screw backs and locking backs are the ones usually called most secure. For a piercing that is still healing, neither is the right question: stay with the flat-back jewelry your piercer fitted.

Most writing on this comes from people who sell earrings, so we say who said what. BriteCo sells jewelry insurance, and its article is by a GIA graduate gemologist. Pip Pop sells flat screw-back earrings. We found no independent test of how well any back holds. Details are as read in November 2026.

The types compared

Back How it holds What the sources say We would use it for
Push or friction A metal piece grips a smooth post BriteCo describes the type. Pip Pop, which sells an alternative, says butterfly styles can loosen and have sharp edges Everyday healed lobes
Screw Twists onto a threaded post BriteCo: more secure, as long as it does not unwind, and only works on threaded posts Valuable studs
Locking A spring lock on the post BriteCo: a bit like both push and screw backs, and among the most secure People who lose earrings
Lever A curved wire that is part of the earring BriteCo: among the most secure Drop earrings
Silicone Soft friction grip BriteCo: suits metal allergies, not as secure Metal allergies
Flat disc Sits flush, with the end pushed or screwed in from the front See our flat back guide Healing piercings, sleep, headphones

Screw backs

A screw back turns onto a thread cut into the post. BriteCo’s caution is that it must not unwind during the day, so check it now and then. Because it only works on a threaded post, you normally buy the earring and back as a set.

The thread matters if a piercing is still healing. The APP says internally threaded jewelry is part of its standard for initial piercings, and describes externally threaded jewelry as having a rough surface. This is our reading rather than the APP’s words on earrings: a standard screw-back post has its thread on the outside, so it goes through the ear each time. Keep it for healed ears.

Locking backs

BriteCo describes these as somewhere between push and screw backs, held by a spring lock. Post sizes vary between makers, so check that a replacement fits your earring.

Silicone and other soft backs

BriteCo says silicone is a good solution for people with metal allergies, but less secure. The APP lists certain plastics, including silicone, as alternative materials and says they may not be safe to wear during sports or sleep. We would not rely on them with a valuable earring.

The metal counts too

The American Academy of Dermatology says earrings, earring backs and watches are some of the biggest culprits for nickel exposure. A titanium post with an unknown back does not solve a nickel problem, and hypoallergenic earrings compares what each source recommends.

Fit

The Cleveland Clinic says a back should be secure but not too tight, and warns that skin can start to grow over the back of an earring as a piercing heals. That is one reason a post needs room while a piercing is new, and why you should see your piercer if a back seems to be sinking in.

Healing piercings

Leave the first jewelry alone until it has healed. When can I change my ear piercing covers the timing, and earrings you can sleep in covers overnight wear.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most secure earring back?

BriteCo, a jewelry insurer, says some of the most secure are lock backs, screw backs and lever backs. Pip Pop, which sells flat screw-back earrings, says the same of its own style. We found no independent test that ranks them.

Can you put a screw back on any earring?

No. BriteCo says screw backs only work on threaded posts, so a smooth post needs a push or locking back instead.

Are screw back earrings safe for a new piercing?

It depends where the thread sits. The APP says internally threaded jewelry is part of its standard for initial piercings, and that externally threaded jewelry has a rough surface. An ordinary screw-back post has its thread on the outside, so we would keep it for healed ears.

Are silicone earring backs good?

BriteCo says silicone suits people with metal allergies but is not as secure as other backs. The APP says alternative materials including silicone may not be safe to wear during sleep.

Why do my earring backs irritate my ears?

The American Academy of Dermatology names earrings and earring backs among the biggest culprits for nickel exposure, so check the metal of the back as well as the post. The Cleveland Clinic also says a back should be secure but not too tight.
